Organize Yourself as a Mac Stickies Ninja

Yes, this is how I organize (?) my life. 

I have been a long-time user of Stickies on my Mac. It is a simple and non-intrusive tool for taking notes. I happened upon a blog posting at the Mac Tuts blog about Stickies and it inspired me do some research and share it with you.

Please note that I have included a table of commands in this posting.

I use stickies in a variety of ways: 
  • I will go into a meeting, pop open a sticky and take voluminous notes about the session.  
  • I also use stickies when I am taking notes about my students' work as I read it. I like to do this because the stickies are small notes that can be placed anywhere on the screen alongside of the work I am reading. 
  • Stickies is a great place for creating your To Do list. Since you can turn a note into a translucent floating note, it can sit in the upper corner.  You will see my To Do list in the photo above. Since it is a floating window, it can appear over any of the other projects that I am running throughout the day as well.
  • I also use Stickies to store photos or screen shots for quick access when I need it.
Organizing Stickies
You can rearrange your stickies in any of 4 ways: Color, Content, Date and Location on the Screen. I usually use Date. It's kind of like organizing things in stacks on your desk. The most recent items are on top. I don't organize by color, but sometimes it is useful to organize by content. I don't understand how the "Location on the Screen" works, but it must be useful.

Keyboard Shortcuts with Stickies
I found a Plethora of Possibilities that I didn't know were available in Stickies. Decided that it would be useful to create a table of the commands and then discuss them  Here it is:

Toggles between Floating and Regular Note
Command + Option + T
Toggles between Translucent and Regular Note

Nab Text – Highlight text or URL. Text will appear on newly created notes
Command + W
Closes the note but allows chance to save before you close
Command + M
Toggles between Collapsing and Opening a note
Drag Media
Drag all forms of media into Sticky Notes (including emails)
Fn –Fn
Dictate to Stickies
Option + Tab
Create a list on your note (Inserts Bullets)
Cool Command

Command + Space
Launch Spotlight












Entering Content into Stickies
  • TALK TO STICKIES - Yes, you can actually dictate to Stickies (and any other text input application.) It is built into into Mac OS 10.8+  THIS IS AWESOME!!!!   You just have to tap the Function key (fn) twice and it will open a microphone to dictate a 30-second audio file. Tap the fn key again and it will save the audio file. You need to be linked to the Internet for you.
  • DRAG CONTENT - You can just drag and drop photos, I have had more success with this when I have been dragging a file to a sticky. 
  • NAB TEXT/URL - Want to save a set of text or URL?  Just highlight the text you want and click Command + Shift + Y.  If you have your Stickies already open, you will see your text appear in a new note. I was pretty excited when I learned about this.
Formatting Stickies
  • LISTS - I have often pined for the ability to insert bullets into my notes.  Here is the answer. Just click Option + Tab and it will insert a bullet.  Click Tab again and it will indent the bullet.  Shift + Tab will outdent your bullet. Hit Return twice and the bullets will disappear. 
Managing Notes
  • EXPLORE - You can rotate from note-to-note by just tapping Command + ~  Great way to peruse your work.
  • OPEN/CLOSE - You can open and close and open and close and open your note with Command + M.
  • SHUT DOWN - Want to delete a note? Tap Command + W.
  • FLOATING - If you want your note to remain in front of the other documents on the screen, you just have to FLOAT it. Tap Command + Option + F to turn your floating on and off.
  • TRANSLUCENT - Sometimes it's useful to be able to see through your notes. I don't use this much but I envision this as an overlay where you can take notes while examining something on your screen.  Just use Command + Option + T to toggle it on and off. 
Sticky Notes for an iPad

Want to have the wonderful capabilities of Stickies on an iPad?  Your dreams have been answered. You can upload Sticky Notes for free to your iPad. It has all of the capabilities of your Mac Stickies but it is on your iPad.  The only problem that I see with it is that there doesn't seem to be a way to synch the messages on my MacBook Pro with my iPad.   This means that I live in 2 different worlds when I move from laptop to tablet and back again.

I just found something called StickiesSynch.https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/31646/stickiessync  Haven't tried this yet, but it might be the answer.  Apparently, you need to have access to a server that will check your system periodically for updates.

I FOUND IT!!!!   I just found AirStickies. This is an app that I found online.  They say that it costs $1.99, but I just downloaded it for free. Turns out that it costs $1.99 for the Mac OS X version to work on your computer. It requires that your iPhone is connected through wifi. I can't get it to work right now.  Will make a posting when that is working.  Good luck.

Evernote Might be Next
There are many things that we can do with Stickies.  I think the next step is Evernote.  I don't know much about Evernote but it would be good to find some way to export all of my Stickies notes to Evernote. Evernote would provide a method for synching between my iPad and MacBook.  It would make life a little less segmented.

Voki is a FUN way to do an Intro!


Voki is a fun way to have an avatar introduction you to your class.  I have asked my students to do this, but rarely have done it myself.  I am going to do that this year.  Should be fun.  Here is the intro that I did for an INTEL course that I am taking called "Facilitating and Implementing Online Professional Development."  Should be fun.

What do you use for introductions?  Can you suggest Avatars that you can make talk?  I tried Xtranormal but it didn't work correctly.

Talk with My Cyber Twin

Looking for a way to be in multiple places at the same time? Want to provide 24/7 feedback to your students and friends?

Well, let me introduce you to MyCyberTwin. This is an online Chatterbot. You ask it questions and it will respond in ways that develop into conversations.

You may have seen a similar Artificially Intelligent conversational agent, Eliza. Eliza was an AI program that came with the Apple II+ computer back in 1980.  It was so good at responding to your questions that some people were fooled into thinking that Eliza was a real person. This is called the Eliza-Effect.

The beauty of MyCyberTwin is that you can teach it what to say. There are over 70 personality questions that you can answer to give your CyberTwin a personality. There are 18 lessons with as many as 36 items where CyberTwin provides you with a potential question/statement that might be provided by a user and you can provide possible answers. You can even provide your own questions and answers.

The best part is that your CyberTwin keeps track of every conversation and even emails each of them to you so that you can keep track of who your cybertwin's discussions. This also allows you to refine your answers as discussions are held.

In short, MyCyberTwin allows you to create your own clone or create a completely different personality - depending upon the persona you want to present.

POSSIBLE APPLICATION: Could you imagine having students create online personalities using MyCyberTwin? They research the personality, perspective and opinions of Thomas Jefferson or Harriet Tubman or Julius Caesar to define the answers that a specific individual would provide.

Think of the discussion and debate that would engage students for hours as they try to get it "just right." THAT is technology-facilitated learning!!

Well, try it out. Tell me what  you think.  I haven't answered all of the questions for my MyCyberTwin, but if you ask interesting questions I will work to refine it.

Using Web 2.0 Tools with University Students

Vinnie Vrotny recently asked me about how I use Web 2.0 tools with my students. I teach Instructional Technology courses at the University of Northern Iowa. I teach an Emerging Instructional Technologies course where I use many of these tools but we integrate them throughout the rest of the courses as well. Here is a list of links to examples of how we use these tools.

Wikibook - Instead of students writing individual research papers for the course, we created an on-line collaborative wikibook. We used the actual Wikimedia software. It was interesting to see that we needed to address topics differently when writing online than when writing on paper. How to determine the length of the paper? (Not pages, but words). How to cite (Reference list? URL? Both?)

RWLDs - The information that you want students to discuss is not always in the book. We have developed Readings, Watchings, Listenings and Doings (RWLD) pages where students can find links to readings, videos, podcasts and things to do. We have found that more students do their homework with RWLDs because they are in a media form that is more appealing. I might point out that we post thes in a Blog form so that the students can subscribe to them like any other blog. Here is an example of one that I used in my Emerging Instructional Technologies course last Fall.
Google Forms - Google forms is probably the most exciting collaborative opportunity that I have found. Google has simplified the prociess of creating an online form to not much more than defining the headings on a spreadsheet. We create and use these forms to elicit student input during and after class. One application that I found interesting was using a Google form to collect evaluation information after I gave a digital portfolio workshop.

Digital Portfolios on Google Sites - Google Sites has made creating digital portfolios a snap. 5 years ago, Andrew Krumm and I created some templates for creating professional digital portfolios. These are housed at http://dpme.org (Digital Portfolios Made Easy). Originally, we made them using Word or HTML templates. Lately, we have created Google Sites templates and all of our Educational Technology and Design students create their digital portfolios using these templates. CoverItLive - Recently we have been experimenting with using an open chat line during lectures. We have been using CoverItLive.com. It is moderated by another professor to ensure that discussion stays on-topic. See the next blog posting down below to actually see the transcript for one of the sessions.

You DON'T have to be an Expert

As a teacher, you DON'T have to be an expert in using technology before you allow your students to use it.

This is probably the greatest barrier to integrating new technologies in the classroom. Many teachers believe that they must master technologies before allowing students to use them. Teachers often feel that they must be their students' safety nets in case they fail. This is NOT the case. Teachers should be the instigators of thought and investigation, but they should allow their students to explore ways to express themselves through a plethora of new technologies.

This attitude is something that is explained through a slideshow created and displayed by Mike Fisher in the 1 Thing project that Clif Mims is running over at his blog, Clif's Notes.

You might notice that Mike Fisher created this slideshow using MyPlick. This is a site where you can upload your slides, synch them with your voice and then share them with friends. It is REALLY easy to share them with friends. I just use their embed feature to transfer this file over to this blog posting - no muss, no fuss. You will probably see me begin to use this in the future. It is Tres Cool!!

Tools for Video Authoring

Ever create a video and upload it to YouTube? Everybody's doing it. Although the statistics haven't been openly available since Google acquired YouTube for $1.650,000,000 (in Google stock), Comscore estimated that in January 2008 alone, nearly 79 million users had made over 3 billion video views.

Here is a video by Jon4Lakers about how to make a video using Macintosh iMovie HD and upload it to YouTube. It is not too complicated. You will note that he did this video while on a studybreak from "writing essays for business school" (note that it has been viewed almost 11,000 times - not bad for a studybreak.)

Jon4Lakers was also courteous enough to provide some instruction on how to use Photobooth on his Macintosh to create YouTube videos.

Wondering how to do this with Windows Movie Maker? It is a little more complicated, but JohnGregory08 from Australia provides a 10-minute video about using MovieMaker to create a video.

Want to know how to do specific things in Movie Maker?
Atomic Learning has a set of 63 free videos for Windows Movie Maker 2.

Screencasting
Wondering how to share what's happening on your screen? This is called a screencast. There are a number of programs that you might want to use: Snapz Pro X (Mac) or Camtasia (Windows)

Another option for screencasting is Jing. This is a free, on-line version of Camtasia by the same company, TechSmith. Dr. Z has already posted on Jing in an earlier blog posting. It is a powerful tool that will allow you to create an online video up to 5-minutes in length. Read his posting to learn more about it.

Here is a video that demonstrates and explains Jing.

The world is full of examples of educators using videos to involve k-18 learners in expressing and exploring new ideas. Here are a few examples. Those of you in the EIT class should have received invitations for becoming authors in this blog so add your own examples (followed by your name). Zoho Rocks!


Google has its studio of tools, but Zoho is close on Google's tail. I learned about Zoho from Kathy Schrock's presentation at NECC 2007, but she only mentioned the Zoho database. Since then Zoho has added a number of applications. These applications include:
Zoho Writer - Online Word Processor
Zoho Sheet - Online Spreadsheet
Zoho Show - Online Presentation tool
Zoho Notebook - Create, Aggregate and Collaborate with multiple types of content online.
Zoho Planner - Online todo list
Zoho CRM - Customer Relationship Management. This looks like a help desk for small businesses. The first 3 lines are free and then it is $12/month for each line after that.
Zoho Creator - Online database (I embedded my first database file below)
Zoho Wiki - Online Wiki
Zoho Chat - You guessed it - a way to type at each other online.
Zoho Mail - Collaboration groupware. Sounded interesting but it is a beta and I believe that it is all written in the Indian language (Hindi? Tamil?) I look forward to this being developed.
Zoho Meeting - Hold an online meeting. Looked like you can share slideshows, communicate through VOIP, even take control of another person's computer for troubleshooting.
Zoho Polls - Create surveys and polls.

These are all free. I haven't had a chance to look at all of them, but it looks promising.

I am embedding a form for completing my database for Web 2.0 Applications below. I copied the HTML code from the Zoho Creator database page and pasted it into the HTML for this page. I have even set it so that I will receive an email notification whenever someone adds a record.

Check it out. This looks good!!!!

NECC 2007 - Expanding Your Classroom with the Interactive Web

It's NECC time!

I assume that if you are reading this, you are probably in my NECC workshop entitled "Expanding Your Classroom with the Interactive Web."

Instead of creating CDs or killing a lot of trees to provide you with notes of resource addresses for this workshop, I am providing these links to site here on my blog. It's quicker, it's easier, AND you can access them with the click of your mouse.

We will discuss the basis of the Interactive Web (AKA "Web 2.0" but I can't use that term here - it is copyrighted ;-)) We will then explore the educational possibilities of using blogs, wikis, podcatching, podcasting and social networking software in the classroom. By the end of this workshop, if all goes well, each of the attendees will have their own blog, wiki, podcast and del.icio.us accounts.

Here are the resources that we will be using. I am posting this here to share it with you readers, but also so that my students will be able to link to them from this posting instead of having to create a whole different website. (pretty cool, eh?)
