Exceptional Skype Video by Silvia Tolisano

I was just reading Wesley Fryer's blog Moving at the Speed of Creativity when I found his reference to Silvia Tolisano's amazing video, Around the World with Skype.

This 20-minute video is the ultimate instructional Skype video. It begins with introducing Skype and telling you how to get online. She then provides a format for connecting with other classrooms, authors, and experts from around the world. This was enlightening. She wasn't just providing rules, sharing her proven methods along with examples of connections that she and her students had made around the world. AND she has created it in both English and Spanish.

Silvia Tolisano has an international project, Around the World with 80 Schools. I must admit that I don't know much about this yet because I just signed up to join the wiki and learn more about the project. I will definitely blog about this later.

I was most impressed by the quality of the informative and instructional video. Ms. Tolisano appears to have used the digital storytelling process where she recorded the narrative first and then found visuals to accompany them. I especially liked what appeared to be original photos where she posed a wooden doll to illustrate a number of ideas that she was discussing.

I am quite pleased to have found Silvia Tolisano and look forward to following her projects.

Creating Landmark Note Cards in Second Life

In Second Life you can return to a place of interest by making a Landmark and storing it in your Inventory. This make it easy for you but the problem is how to share these landmarks with others. You can just "drop" them on other avatars one at a time, but what if you have a number of locations that you want to share?

It is possible to create a HUD, but that takes too much programming. The easiest way is to create a note card. A note card is short document that you can create in SL. Once you have opened the note card, you just need to drag Landmarks from your Inventory to the note card.

I wanted to demonstrate this to my students so I used Jing to create a 4:45 video. You can see it in the upper left corner. I had my avatar turn to face the camera so it looked like he was talking while I was explaining it. It was pretty cool because his lips were moving and arms "cutting the air thusly . . . " as I spoke.

I have had a few people ask me about how to animate my avatar so it would move as I spoke. Here are some notes about how to do that:

Lip Synching: This is an option on your SL Advanced menu. If you don't find this in your SL menu, you need to use some keystrokes to turn it on (Mac: Control-Alt-Shift-D / Windows: Control-Alt-D) Now, you need to enable the Lip Sync (Advanced>Character>Enable Lip Sync (beta)

Speech Gestures: Speech gestures should be in a folder in your Inventory. If you can't find them, you will have to search for some - I don't know where you can find them right now. Once you have them, you can right click on any of the gestures to unveil a menu that will allow you to activate or deactivate the gesture. The names aren't too descriptive so you will just have to mix and match until you like what you see.

How to Take a Good Photograph

I was just reading Rushton Hurley's newsletter when I found a link to Amber Blow's trilogy of videos about How to Take a Good Photograph. These videos involve various aspects for taking good photographs. She discusses long shots, close ups, rule of thirds, filling the frame and many other important considerations in photography.

This is by no means a "Kodak Production", but it covers a number of the primary considerations in photography and demonstrates how we can create informative tutorials with quality photos and ample planning. These videos appear to be the product of a class project at the University of Regina. They are worth a look.

Complete Fool's Guide to Second Life


I was just reviewing the Second Life Tutorial website that I found while reading Steve A's blog and I found the Complete Fool's Guide to Second Life. This is a 72-page pdf file that takes you on a great tour of what you will experience in Second Life. Wish it had been a video with an accompanying pdf file for later reference. I browsed through it and found that I had learned a great deal of this information by-hook-and-by-crook. It would have been much nicer if I had used this tutorial.

I would strongly recommend this wonderful introductory tutorial. You should also look at the Second Life Tutorial site to see what else you can do in Second Life.

Using YouTube to Teach


Well, I just created my first tutorial video for YouTube. Actually, I created it for my Emerging Instructional Technologies course at the University of Northern Iowa, but I am storing it on YouTube. I tried to upload it to TeacherTube, but it took forever to upload it and I finally quit it and went for YouTube.

The tutorial instructs my students how to add blogs to their Google Reader utility. It is quite informal. I did the personal introductory part in my livingroom and then did the screencast (video capture of what was happening on the screen) just using my computer and computer microphone.

This video, Adding Blogs to Your Google Reader is accessible on YouTube for you to watch and then try out.

STUDENTS: I would suggest that you:
1) Watch the video to see how to do it.
2) Try adding this blog, Dr. Z Reflects, to your Google Reader.
3) Go to our wiki page where students are posting their blog addresses
4) Add your classmates' blogs to your Reader and keep up on what they are saying throughout the semester. You might even want to react to their comments to build a REAL learning community.

This may be the beginning of something big.
